Cyprus leads November — and the reason is in the gap, not the average

Every competitor listicle opens with the Canary Islands. On daytime high, Cyprus wins instead, and Nicosia is the clearest example of why. Nicosia sits ninth on monthly mean (16.5°C) — it doesn't even make most top-10 lists — but climbs to third on daytime high (21.8°C), a 5.3°C swing between the two numbers. That gap is the diurnal temperature range, and it comes down to geography. Nicosia sits inland on Cyprus's central plain, away from any sea-moderating effect: afternoons heat up fast and nights cool off fast, so the mean undersells the day. Las Palmas sits on a small Atlantic island with ocean on every side, which keeps day and night close together but caps how hot the afternoon can climb. How we measure this: daytime high vs. monthly mean

The two temperature columns come from different layers, and it's worth being precise about which is which. Daytime high — the headline number throughout this page — is native ~1km CHELSA v2.1 tasmax climatology with an ERA5 warming uplift on top, giving 2011–2025 normals. Monthly mean, sunshine and rainfall use the standard CHELSA v2.1 grid plus SARAH-3 for sunshine, both on 1991–2020 normals, calibrated against 219 WMO stations.
